What does the reverse gear steel thrust washer do?
The reverse gear steel thrust washer sits on top of the reverse gear, between the gear and the snap ring that locks into the groove immediately above it. It serves as both a spacer and a retainer — filling the gap between the snap ring and the reverse gear, keeping the gear correctly positioned axially on the mainshaft and preventing unwanted movement during operation. Without it in place, the snap ring has no bearing surface to seat against and the reverse gear loses its axial constraint.
Unlike the plastic thrust washer and wave washer lower in the reverse assembly, this is a steel component designed to handle the direct load of the snap ring above it.
When would you need to replace it?
This is not a routine replacement item during a standard rebuild. It typically needs replacement when a nearby component has failed and caused damage, or when it has been lost or damaged during disassembly. Inspect it carefully during any rebuild and replace it if there is any sign of damage, deformation, or wear on the contact surfaces.
