What does the reverse gear plastic thrust washer do?

This plastic thrust washer sits between the reverse synchro hub and the reverse synchro ring, working in conjunction with the wave washer on the opposite side to sandwich the reverse synchro ring in a controlled position. The wave washer applies light, controlled preload on the reverse synchro ring from above, while this plastic thrust washer provides the bearing surface below — keeping the reverse synchro ring from floating axially or making unwanted contact with adjacent components while the transmission is in any gear other than reverse. It’s a small but essential component that keeps the reverse synchro assembly correctly positioned during normal operation.

When would you need to replace it?

This is not a routine replacement item during a standard rebuild. It typically needs replacement when a nearby component has failed and caused damage, or when it has been lost during disassembly.
