The rear offset lever is the internal component inside the transmission where the ball of the shifter stick rides — creating the mechanical connection between the external shifter and the internal shift rail that allows gear changes to be made. This is the GTO-specific version, which is longer than the standard offset lever to accommodate the unique shifter geometry of the Pontiac GTO. It is an original new original Tremec part and one that is genuinely difficult to track down — Tremec produces these infrequently, making availability unpredictable at best.
This is not a part that typically wears out or fails under normal operation. It would need replacement if damaged, or during a transmission swap where the correct GTO-specific lever is needed to ensure proper shifter geometry and feel. Using the incorrect standard-length lever in a GTO application will result in improper shifter ball engagement preventing engagement of some gears.
