What does this spacer do?

This spacer sits on top of the 3rd gear caged needle bearing, keeping it correctly positioned inside the transmission. It exists specifically to fill the gap above the needle bearing. This spacer is not used on triple-cone T56 applications such as the Corvette, CTS-V, GTO and SSR.

When would you need this spacer?

This is not a routine wear item. It typically needs replacement when surrounding components have been damaged and the spacer was lost or compromised in the process. For example, the original spacer could get destroyed due to heat damage if a nearby component has burned up. If missing, the 3rd gear caged needle bearing loses its positional support and will move around — leading to bearing noise, accelerated wear, and potential damage to surrounding components.
