What does the reverse wave washer do?
The reverse wave washer sits on top of the reverse synchro ring, between the ring and the reverse gear. Working in conjunction with the plastic thrust washer on the opposite side, these two components sandwich the reverse synchro ring in a controlled position. The wave washer applies light, controlled preload on the reverse synchro ring from above — while the plastic thrust washer provides the bearing surface below — keeping the reverse synchro ring from floating axially or making unwanted contact with adjacent components while the transmission is in any gear other than reverse.
Think of the wave washer and plastic thrust washer as a matched pair. Both should be inspected any time the reverse assembly is disassembled and replaced together if either shows signs of damage.
When would you need to replace it?
This is not a routine replacement item during a standard rebuild. It typically needs replacement when a nearby component has failed and caused damage, or when it has been lost during disassembly. Inspect it carefully during any rebuild and replace it if there is any sign of damage, deformation, or fatigue in the spring tension.
