What does this spacer do?
This spacer sits on top of the 2nd gear caged needle bearing, keeping it correctly positioned inside the transmission. It exists specifically because triple-cone T56 units use specifically machined speed gears to accommodate the thicker multi-ring stack — creating a gap that this spacer is engineered to fill. On single-cone T56 applications such as the F-body, this spacer simply isn’t needed.
When would you need this spacer?
This is not a routine wear item. It typically needs replacement when surrounding components have been damaged and the spacer was lost or compromised in the process. If missing, the 2nd gear caged needle bearing loses its positional support and will move around — leading to bearing noise, accelerated wear, and potential damage to surrounding components.
