What does the reverse strut retainer do?
The reverse strut retainer holds the reverse struts securely in position inside the transmission. Its job is to prevent the struts from being pushed out of place during operation. It’s a small but consequential component — without it, the reverse struts have no positional constraint and are vulnerable to being displaced under load.
When would you need this retainer?
This is not a routine wear item — it typically needs replacement when nearby components have been damaged and the retainer was lost or compromised in the process. If the retainer is missing or damaged, the reverse struts can be pushed out of position, leading to strut damage and potential collateral damage to surrounding transmission components. If you know it’s missing or damaged, replace it before reassembly.
